Calgary Basketball Academy (CBA) is committed to the health and safety of all participants. This Concussion Protocol outlines the procedures for the recognition, management, and return to play following a suspected or diagnosed concussion, in alignment with Basketball Alberta, Canada Basketball, and applicable provincial concussion legislation and guidelines.
A concussion is a brain injury caused by a direct or indirect blow to the head or body that results in an impairment of brain function. Symptoms may present immediately or develop over time.
Any player who is suspected of having sustained a concussion during a CBA activity must be immediately removed from play and will not be permitted to return to participation on the same day.
Signs and symptoms may include, but are not limited to:
Headache or pressure in the head
Dizziness, nausea, or vomiting
Confusion, disorientation, or difficulty concentrating
Sensitivity to light or noise
Balance problems
Changes in behaviour or mood
When in doubt, the player will be removed from play.
Players suspected of sustaining a concussion must be evaluated by a qualified medical professional. Written medical clearance is required before a player may begin a return-to-play progression.
CBA follows a graduated return-to-play protocol and supports a return-to-learn approach that prioritizes academic recovery before full athletic participation.
A player may only return to full participation after:
Being symptom-free at rest and during exertion
Completing a graduated return-to-play progression
Providing written medical clearance from a qualified healthcare professional
No player will be permitted to return to play while experiencing concussion symptoms.
Athletes are responsible for reporting symptoms honestly and promptly.
Parents/Guardians are responsible for monitoring symptoms and seeking appropriate medical care.
Coaches are responsible for removing athletes from play when a concussion is suspected and following CBA procedures.
CBA is responsible for ensuring this policy is followed and for promoting concussion education and awareness.
CBA supports ongoing concussion education for athletes, parents, coaches, and volunteers to promote early recognition, proper management, and safe return to participation.
Failure to adhere to this Concussion Protocol may result in removal from participation or disciplinary action in accordance with CBA policies and governing body guidelines.
This policy will be reviewed regularly to ensure alignment with Basketball Alberta, Canada Basketball, and current concussion best practices and legislation.
